A well-scoped no-coding AI agent can handle most operational AI work. Real examples we see in production every week:

- Lead enrichment — take a name + company, scrape LinkedIn / Crunchbase, look up firmographics, write a personalized cold email.
- Internal RAG — answer team questions against your Notion, Drive, or Confluence with citations.

Honesty matters here — no-code agent platforms are not magic. The ceiling is real, and most platform breakdowns happen because someone tried to push past it.
Hard custom logic. If your agent needs branching that doesn't fit the platform's primitives — recursive sub-agents, deeply nested conditional flows, custom retry policies — you'll spend more time fighting the UI than you would writing 200 lines of code.
Production-grade evals. Most no-code platforms let you test a run, but few have proper eval pipelines (golden datasets, regression tracking, CI on prompt changes). For a public-facing agent where a wrong answer costs you trust, this gap matters.
Latency-sensitive workloads. Voice agents, real-time chat with strict SLAs, or anything that needs sub-second response times generally outgrow no-code orchestration overhead.
Vendor lock-in. Your prompts, your tool definitions, your memory schema — all live inside the platform's database. Migration is painful by design.
Privacy / data residency. Most no-code platforms route your data through their cloud. Self-hosted n8n is the main exception. If you're handling PHI, financial data, or anything covered by enterprise compliance, read the platform's data-processing terms before you build.

Pricing is approximate and changes often — confirm on each platform's site before committing.
Three questions narrow it down fast:
1. Is the agent conversational or task-driven? Conversational (chat, voice, dialogue) → Voiceflow or Botpress. Task-driven (run a workflow, finish a job) → n8n, Make, Zapier, Lindy, or Relevance AI.
2. How many third-party tools does the agent need to call? 1-3 simple integrations → Lindy or Zapier. 5+ integrations with conditional logic → n8n is the most flexible. Internal-only RAG over your docs → Stack AI or a custom n8n flow.
3. What's your data sensitivity? Public-data-only or low-stakes internal → cloud platforms are fine. Regulated data, audit requirements, or "the legal team will block this" → self-hosted n8n is the only mainstream no-code answer.
For most ops/marketing teams shipping their first agent, n8n is the safest default — open-source, self-hostable, broadest integration catalog, and a working escape hatch (the Code node) when the visual UI hits its limit.
A working agent on any of the platforms above follows the same five steps:
- Define the job in one sentence. "When a new lead comes in via Typeform, look them up on Apollo, draft a personalized email, and queue it in HubSpot for sales review." If you can't write the job in one sentence, the agent's scope is wrong.
- Pick the trigger. Most agents start from a webhook (form, email, chat message) or a schedule (every hour, every morning).
- Wire up the tools the agent needs. API connections, database access, knowledge sources. On n8n / Make this is drag-and-drop. On Lindy / Voiceflow it's a templated tool-picker.
- Write the system prompt. This is where 80% of agent quality lives. Be specific about role, constraints, output format, and what to do when uncertain. *"Reply in plain text. If you're less than 80% confident, return
ESCALATE instead."* - Test against 5–10 real inputs. Not synthetic ones — real ones from the past week. Note the failures, tighten the prompt, repeat.
For most use cases, the gap between "agent works once" and "agent works in production" is one weekend of testing and prompt iteration — not a re-platform.
Here's the honest version, the kind we'd tell you on a scoping call. Stay on no-code as long as you can — it's faster, cheaper, and easier to iterate. Graduate to custom code when one of these things happens:
- Your agent's logic outgrows the platform. You're using six "if" branches, four sub-workflows, and the visual graph is unreadable. At that point a 300-line Python or TypeScript file is simpler, not more complex.
- You need evals as CI. A golden dataset, regression tests, and an alert when prompt changes hurt accuracy. No-code platforms generally don't support this; custom code does.
- You need provider flexibility per task. GPT-4o for speed, Claude for reasoning, a local model for sensitive data — orchestrated in one agent. Most no-code platforms pick one provider per node.
- Latency or throughput becomes critical. Voice agents, real-time chat, or high-volume async pipelines often need optimizations the platform doesn't expose.
- Vendor lock-in becomes a real risk. The agent is now a core business asset, and the cost of being stuck on one platform — pricing changes, feature deprecations, outages — outweighs the convenience.
- Compliance demands it. SOC 2, HIPAA, or enterprise procurement that requires full code ownership and audit trails.
If you hit any of these, the move isn't to fight the platform — it's to take what you learned (the prompt, the tools, the user flow) and rebuild it as a custom-coded agent. The prototype was the spec.

Platform subscription. $0–$200/month for most starter plans across the platforms above (free tiers exist on n8n self-hosted, Make, Zapier, Voiceflow, Stack AI, and Botpress). Credit- or operation-based pricing (Make, Zapier, Lindy, Voiceflow) climbs with volume; seat-based pricing (Voiceflow, Relevance AI) climbs with team size. Self-hosted n8n is free on a $5/month VPS.
LLM API costs. This is usually the bigger line. Budget $0.01–$0.10 per agent run for most workflows using GPT-4o-mini or Claude Haiku. Heavier agents (long context, multi-tool, GPT-4 / Claude Sonnet) run $0.10–$0.50 per execution. At 1,000 runs/day, that's $300–$15,000/month — model choice matters.

For low-stakes internal workflows, yes — cloud no-code platforms are typically SOC 2 compliant and use the standard provider security model (encryption at rest, role-based access, audit logs on higher tiers).
For regulated data (PHI, financial records, anything covered by GDPR with strict data-residency requirements), the answer is: only if self-hosted. Most cloud no-code platforms route data through US-based infrastructure and the agent's prompts/responses transit a third-party server. That's fine for most teams, blocking for some.
If compliance is a hard constraint, self-hosted n8n on your own VPS or VPC is the standard no-code answer. Beyond that — fully custom-coded agents on your own infrastructure with model providers you control.
A practical distinction: an AI workflow runs a fixed sequence of steps with an LLM call inside one of them ("summarize this document → email the summary"). An AI agent can decide the next step on its own, choose which tool to call, and loop until it's done.
Most no-code platforms blur the line on purpose — they call any flow with an LLM in it an "agent." That's marketing. If your build has predetermined steps in a predetermined order, it's a workflow. If the LLM gets to plan and re-plan based on what it sees, it's an agent.
Both are useful. Workflows are simpler and more predictable; agents are more flexible and harder to debug. Start with a workflow; promote to an agent only when fixed-sequence stops being enough.
